Voodoo Sol

Voodoo Sol is the fusing together of a number of distinguished Boston-based bands. This group of five have collectively played in more bands than you can count for more years then they want to remember. The experiences, both musical and personal, that these guys bring with them is what makes this band so interesting.

Mike Smith - Mike has been a professional musician for most of his life. He has toured through most of the US and Canada with his past bands; the Mudhens, Johnny Groove, The Motor City Rhythm Kings, and The Flutie Brother's Band (featuring Doug and Darren Flutie). Mike has even been a touring member of a version of the Bay City Rollers featuring Ian Mitchell. Mike has played on the Howard Stern Show, Entertainment Tonight, Much Music and been mentioned on MTV as well as spots on national and network news stations from Vancouver to Boston. Mike only plays Reverend guitars.

Bob West - Bob West started his romance with low frequencies at an early age. Stuck by his family in front of a Grundig stereo playing the Beatles… ah, so warm. Perhaps everything since has been an attempt to return to that womb. Piano thrown in their too, with lessons. Later, there was a lot of listening, emulation, and then attempts at originality. Lots of prog-rock to stimulate the fingers and brain, followed by an obsession with the genius of Jaco, a dabbling in funk, and then a search for the lowest common denominator which continues to this day. Then the 5-string changed everything again. Current project: working on developing a single string bass of extremely heavy gage that can communicate with things that “shake it”.

Ted Armstrong - A graduate of the esteemed Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ted brings strong, eclectic credentials to the group. The last five years were spent making the fonk-a-fied sounds of Roadside Prophet. Before that he spent eleven years with the Boston-based blues band Walk That Walk who shared the stage with the likes of Bo Diddley, Carey Bell and Johnnie Johnson. Ted is also a member of The Flutie Brothers Band. Other bands Ted has played in are The Bay City Rollers featuring Ian Mitchell, James Montgomery and Friends, Easy Ray and the Daily Blues, Out of the Blue, Memphis Train  and Flame . He has opened for Luther "Guitar Jr" Johnson, Son Seals, Wild Child Butler, Johnny Copeland, Big Jack Johnson, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Levon Helms, Tinsley Ellis and C.J. Chenier.

Darnell Clark- Ivory Darnell Clark hails from Ashland , Massachusetts , by way of the original motor city Detroit , MI . “D” (as his friends prefer to call him) has shared the stage with several artists such as Anita Baker, Ike Turner, Tony Lynn Washington and a host of others. “D” has sung the national anthem for the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics for the past several years. He has also sung jingles for a number of businesses in the Massachusetts and Michigan area. His main objective is to make great music that everyone can enjoy.

Steve Pappone - a Boston area native began playing the drums at age 2, following in the footsteps of his ole’ man. Steve earned his BFA in Music from UMass Boston and has studied with local greats Ed Sorrentino, Steve Turner, Casey Scheuerell and Frank Epstein. Steve has performed in and around Boston w/many local projects over the years, including; Half Past Al, Souled Out, Ginger Vadala, WonderKat and Clutch Grabwell. Steve is a member of the Vic Firth Education Team, N.A.D. and maintains a private drum instruction studio at his home. Steve performs regularly w/the spirited jazz sensation C-Zone Music when he’s not cookin’ w/VooDoo Sol. He sells cymbals during the day, teaches drum lessons @ night & plays them both hard on the weekend!

PD Rogers - PD Rogers has been playing the Boston music scene for several years. His first stage was the back seat of the family station wagon where he learned a love of Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and the entire Motown family. He earned his Ph.D. (Doctor of Phunk), first as lead singer of Motherfunk and later WonderKat where he earned a reputation as a dynamic front man. Along the way he learned a few things about playing the guitar, so that he's currently been touring New England as a solo/duo artist where he can express the influences of his later life (The Black Crowes, The Police, John Mayer). Now joining the Sol he's able me meld all of his influences while sharing guitar and front man duties.
